ICSI — intracytoplasmic sperm injection
An embryologist injects one sperm into an egg. ICSI changes the fertilisation step within IVF; it is not a complete treatment cycle or a universal way to improve live-birth rates.
It may be discussed for significant sperm abnormalities or previous poor or failed fertilisation. Ask what finding supports its use instead of conventional fertilisation.

An egg can be damaged during micromanipulation. Injection does not guarantee fertilisation, a transferable embryo or live birth. The wider stimulation, retrieval and transfer risks still apply.
Questions to ask
- Which result makes ICSI appropriate?
- Is the charge per cycle or based on egg numbers?
- Who explains fertilisation and culture results?
